How to Install: SS3 SAE/DOT Type SDX Fog Light Kit

The Diode Dynamics SS3 SAE/DOT Type SDX Fog Light Kit is CAD-designed to use existing mounting points and is compatible with 2000–2005 Ford Excursion and 1999–2010 Ford F-250/F-350 models. This guide walks through bracket installation, wiring, and proper aiming of your new SS3 fog lights.

IMPORTANT: This installation guide is based on the 1999–2007 model years, which place the fog lights in the lower grille. Model years 2008–2010 place the fog lamps outboard from the tow hooks, requiring access from underneath the bumper. The steps listed apply to 2008–2010 models, but images may vary slightly.

Table of Contents

Installation Tools

  • 8mm socket
  • Trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Wire strippers/crimpers (if tapping a circuit for backlight power)

Time Required: Approximately 1–2 hours.

Installation Instructions

Step 1 – Remove license plate holder (if applicable)

Remove the license plate holder to gain access to the fog light area.

Step 2 – Remove OEM aim adjustment screw and spring

Using an 8mm socket, remove the OEM lamp aim adjustment screw and compression spring. Access the screw from the rear of the bracket through the lower grille or from underneath the bumper. This hardware will be reused.

Step 3 – Remove OEM lamp

Using a trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver, remove the two plastic push-rivets holding the lamp on the OEM bracket. These will be reused.

The outboard push rivet can be accessed through the tow hook opening. Gently pass the lamp through the bumper opening. The OEM bracket may remain installed, or you may remove it using an 8mm socket (two bolts on top, one on bottom).

Step 4 – Transfer plastic nut insert

Transfer the plastic nut insert from the OEM lamp to the new Type SDX bracket. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the clip from the OEM lamp and gently press it into the Type SDX bracket.

NOTE: Replacement OEM lamps produced in 2011 or later use a different style clip intended for a round mating hole. This clip may initially feel loose when reused on the Type SDX bracket but will firmly hold the bracket in place once properly aimed and installed.

Step 5 – Mount SS3 pod to bracket

Firmly mount the SS3 pod onto the Type SDX bracket using the included hardware. The same bracket is used for both driver and passenger sides.

Ensure the DT power connector is on the bottom of the lamp and that the SAE markings are readable when installed. Tighten mounting screws with the lamp aimed straight forward. Do not overtighten or use power tools.

Step 6 – Install bracket and assembly

Install the Type SDX bracket and SS3 assembly onto the vehicle. Plug in the included DT-to-H10 adapter and pass it through the opening in the rear of the OEM lamp bracket.

Reuse the OEM plastic push-rivets on the top of the bracket. Reinstall the OEM bracket if it was removed in Step 3.

If equipped with backlight functionality, connect the backlight power wire to a fused 12V source (commonly parking light or sidemarker circuit). T-Taps are included for this purpose.

NOTE: Power source must be fused. Do not connect directly to the vehicle battery.

Step 7 – Reinstall adjustment screw and spring

Using an 8mm socket, reinstall the OEM aim adjustment screw and compression spring.

Step 8 – Repeat on opposite side

Repeat Steps 2–7 on the other side of the vehicle.

Aiming Instructions

Step 9 – Position vehicle

Park your vehicle 25 feet away from a wall or garage door on a level surface.

Step 10 – Measure mounting height

Measure the distance between the ground and the center of your SS3 pod. This is your mounting height.

Step 11 – Mark cutoff line

Mark the mounting height on the wall using tape. Add another piece of tape four inches below the mounting height. This is your fog light cutoff line.

Step 12 – Aim the pods

Aim your SS3 pods so that the top of the beam pattern aligns with the cutoff line mark. Use the 8mm socket to tighten the adjustment screw until satisfied with beam position.

Step 13 – Reinstall license plate holder

Reinstall the license plate holder (if applicable) to complete installation.
