HP5: Four high-power SMDs, under a diffusing lens. Just like the HP3, but run at higher power, with integrated copper plating for superior heat dissipation, allowing maximum brightness.

HP36: Full 360 degree illumination with 36 High-Power Samsung LEDs. Aluminum base for optimum heatsinking, and non-polar design for easy installation.

XP50: Each of the four sides of this bulb contains two 5W-rated chips, and the top is fitted with two more under a projector lens. Housed in an aluminum casing with textured finish for maximum heatsinking properties.

Fitment. All three bulbs use a quality inject-molded 921 terminal, with a sturdy base connector and proper pin alignment, designed for exact replacement of your factory 921 bulb. You will not need resistors for backup lights. Just replace the factory bulb.

Included in your order is TWO BULBS.

These LEDs illuminate in a crisp, cool, bright, white hue for maximum light output.

Diode Dynamics offers several brightness options so you can choose what fits you best.  These options are listed by the design and the lumen output of each bulb:

HP5: Slightly lower brightness than OEM bulbs, but still provides the crisp, modern instant on/off of LED technology.
HP36: Slightly higher brightness than OEM bulbs.
XP50: Much brighter than OEM bulbs. These are bright!

Lumens. BUYER BEWARE! Most sellers just provide "calculated" lumen numbers, based on the maximum potential brightness of the LED chips on the bulb. For example, if a bulb has five 10-lumen chips, they will rate it at 50 lumens. However, this is not accurate, as the design of an LED bulb does not get rid of heat fast enough to run the LEDs at maximum.

These "calculated" lumen ratings are much, much higher than the true, measured light output, so it will look like competitors' bulbs are brighter than ours. This is because Diode Dynamics does not provide inflated "calculated" numbers; we believe it is misleading. We test the actual brightness of the bulbs in our lab, to provide real lumen output measurements. Our measurements are accurate, but they are usually much lower than the misleading "calculated" figures. Please click here to learn more about LED brightness measurement.

LED Components. Diode Dynamics uses only the highest quality LED chips in the production of its bulbs. This means we use only brand-name suppliers such as Epistar, Osram, and Samsung.

While Diode Dynamics bulbs may look the same as others on the market, most copycat bulbs use economy-grade LED chips in order to reduce costs. This greatly reduces the reliability and overall brightness of the bulb when you compare it to Diode Dynamics.

Construction. Although LED technology allows for extremely long bulb life, the market is flooded with cheap LED bulbs that fail prematurely due to inferior construction. The worst enemy of LEDs is excessive heat, and when bulbs are not designed properly, they do not disperse heat as well, leading to premature failure.

Off-brand, cheap bulbs exhibit poor solder uniformity, high levels of flux in the solder, uneven chip placement, low-gauge terminal wires, poor assembly, and bulbs held together with inferior adhesives. At best, solder joints will crack and fail on low-quality LEDs after a few weeks of use. In the worst case, these bulbs can damage housings as the extra flux and adhesive evaporates and creates a residue on the lens of the housing.

Diode Dynamics bulbs are produced with modern, computerized equipment, and only the best materials, to ensure complete uniformity, high quality, and long bulb life.

All Diode Dynamics products come with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and a 3-year limited replacement warranty. For more information, please view the Warranty Information page.

  1. Much brighter than stock bulbs.. Review by H.M.

I purchased the XP 50 bulbs and they are a great improvement over the stock bulbs that were in my FJ when I bought it.
With the stock bulbs I could not see anything behind me when I was backing up now with the XP 50 bulbs I can see behind what is behind me as I am backing up.
After I installed the XP 50 bulbs a friend was behind me and he told me that it looked like I had headlights on the back of my FJ because they were so bright.. (Posted on 12/20/16)

  2. Great light Review by Milne117

Like many others I first purchased the 36's, only to find the dark tint on the FJ really dims out the light. I then ordered the 50's and am very happy. One bulb did not light and a quick phone call to customer services solved th nproblem, I just had to pull out the connector a little. Great product and great service (Posted on 11/25/16)

  3. always good quality Review by milne117

I have updated several bulbs lately and they are great. I just did the 35's for my back up lights but will go for the 50's. The FJ really needs the additional light. The license plate bulbs are bright and easy to install, I also did the side mirror bulbs and again great light and good value. (Posted on 11/14/16)

  4. FANTASTIC Review by Diddly D

The stock backup lights in my 2007 FJ were worthless from day one, downright dangerous once my vehicle wrap was applied. These install easily and are crazy bright. Should have done this a lot sooner! (Posted on 7/15/16)

  5. Go with the XP50 Review by Robert

2012 FJ XP50. Spend the extra cash, its a must have with tinted windows. Stock backup lights suck on the FJ. Now I can see!!
You will not be disappointed. (Posted on 2/23/16)

  6. Lit Up Review by Jack

I have an FJ Cruiser. I tried a name brand back up LED lights that were advertised as being brighter than the stock lights. I returned them. The Diode Dynamic XP50 are expensive no doubt. But they are super bright. And there's no comparison to the stock or others I tried. XP50 is less cost when compared to the price of aftermarket LED lights that have to be mounted on the bumper or roof rack. XP50 doesn't require any extra wires, drilling or mounting. With a 3 year warranty, XP50 is the only way to go. (Posted on 2/5/16)

  7. XP50's Review by Chris

Other than the fact that these were hard to get installed because Toyota's engineers have hands like a 10 year old girl, these lights are amazingly bright. I have dark tint on my FJ and was having difficulty backing into my driveway at night, but now I have no trouble. These things light up my driveway! (Posted on 1/7/16)

  8. Great lights Review by Aminiman98

These lights took a little while to put in (mainly due to the ergonomics of the FJ's rear light access panel). But once they were put in, they looked great. Not only was there a huge difference in the quality and intensity of lighting when putting the car in reverse, but the increased lighting also made it easier to see using my backup camera at night. It was like having two LED flashlights lighting up everything behind me! (Posted on 1/5/16)

  9. XP50 - Worth Every Penny! Review by Taylor

After getting my FJ I knew that with the tinted back window and dim backup lights I was going to need something a little brighter to help me navigate my unlit driveway. After a bit of price and brightness comparison I ended up getting the XP50s. They only took a few days to arrive, which was much faster than expected. After watching DD's FJ Taillight installation tutorial: I had a better understanding of how to do it. WOW! These lights are bright even in the day time. From start to finish replacing the stock bulbs with the new LEDs took about 5 minutes and was very easy. Completely plug and play. I would definitely go with the XP50s. Yes they are the most expensive but you certainly get the bang for your buck. I'll be swapping out the rest of my stock bulbs with DD's brightest LEDs soon. Couldn't be happier! (Posted on 12/14/15)

  10. Wow - these are super bright and work great! Review by Bezoar

The before/after pics on the site and on FJ Cruiser Forums are true - they illuminate behind he more than twice as far as the stock bulbs. (Posted on 12/11/15)

  11. Nice and bright Review by PJ

A much needed enhancement. The factory should have though of this from the beginning. (Posted on 11/2/15)

  12. WOW! I can see now Review by Basscat19

If you're already digging into the taillight housing, replace everything. The XP50 is worth the cost. The light is bright, clean and white, a far cry from the dull yellow of OEM. You will not be disappointed. XP50 period. Don't skimp on backup light. (Posted on 9/2/15)

  13. XP50 Review by Morgan

These work perfectly! 5 minute install and completely plug and play. I recommend keeping your old bulbs just in case, at least for a while. Get the XP50's!! The brightest model of these LED's are by far worth it! especially at night. I recommend getting tail lights also if you purchase these. Clean looking, MUCH brighter than stock, VERY practical at night. (Posted on 8/13/15)

  14. HP36 Review by Daniel

These bulbs were the first LED's I purchased from Diode Dynamics. I went with the modest HP36 and am extremely happy with them. If LED's are what you are looking for, you cannot go wrong with Diode Dynamics. (Posted on 1/25/15)

  15. XP50 - Could not be more happy! Review by jrope

Installed stage three (XP50) in stock light receptacle. Even with the high cost of these bulbs, they saved me a lot of money by not needing to install additional lighting on the rear of my FJ. I have seen numerous LED bulbs in the past and these are the highest quality I have seen. I have had for nine months now with no issues whatsoever. (Posted on 9/22/14)

  16. XP50 - Could not be more happy! Review by jrope

To be honest I was very apprehensive about this purchase. It was my first time ordering through Diode Dynamics and the high cost for just two bulbs. As you know the FJ has dark tinted windows in the back and the stock backup bulbs are totally useless for seeing anything. I looked into adding additional lights in the rear, but this is what I decided to try first. These bulbs work so well, I do not need to add the additional lights. Even at the high cost for bulbs I saved a lot of money. Thank you... (Posted on 9/22/14)

Backup LEDs are a direct replacement. Just change the bulb! You will not need any resistors or other accessories.

Remove your factory bulb

  1. 1. Access the bulb or tail light. You may need to pull back the trunk/cargo carpet and/or unscrew the visible nuts holding the light in.
  2. 2. Remove the backup bulb socket by twisting counterclockwise.
  3. 3. Remove the factory bulb from the socket.

Install your new LED bulb

  1. 1. Plug new LED bulb into socket by pushing it in fully.
  2. 2. Test the function of the bulb. If it does not work, remove it, rotate, and reinstall in the socket.
  3. 3. Insert socket back into place, and reassemble as necessary. That's it!
