HP48: This bulb is non-polar, CK compatible, with 48 Epistar 3014 LED chips. Thanks to the cap on the top, the light from this High Power Bulb is shined backwards and away from the bulb, not straight out. This means the output is excellent, because it uses the vehicle's housing completely, which then shines the light much more uniformly.

HP11: Four side-firing 1.5W-rated Osram LED chips, and one 5W-rated LED chip on top, which is projected by a lens for maximum effective brightness. The bulb is housed in a machined aluminum casing, which provides superior heat diffusion for long life.

XP80: Each of the four sides of this bulb contains three 5W-rated chips, and the top is fitted with four more under a projector lens. This is the brightest self-contained automotive LED bulb on the market, and is housed in an aluminum casing with a textured finish for maximum heatsinking properties.

Fitment. All three bulbs use a quality inject-molded 7440 terminal, with a locking base connector and proper pin alignment, designed for exact replacement of your factory 7440 bulb.

Included in your order is TWO BULBS.

These LEDs illuminate in a crisp, cool, bright, white hue for maximum light output.

Diode Dynamics offers several brightness options so you can choose what fits you best.  These options are listed by the design and the lumen output of each bulb:

HP48: Slightly lower brightness than OEM bulbs, but still provides the crisp, modern instant on/off of LED technology.
HP11: Slightly higher brightness than OEM bulbs.
XP80: Much brighter than OEM bulbs. These are bright!

Lumens. BUYER BEWARE! Most sellers just provide "calculated" lumen numbers, based on the maximum potential brightness of the LED chips on the bulb. For example, if a bulb has five 10-lumen chips, they will rate it at 50 lumens. However, this is not accurate, as the design of an LED bulb does not get rid of heat fast enough to run the LEDs at maximum.

These "calculated" lumen ratings are much, much higher than the true, measured light output, so it will look like competitors' bulbs are brighter than ours. This is because Diode Dynamics does not provide inflated "calculated" numbers; we believe it is misleading. We test the actual brightness of the bulbs in our lab, to provide real lumen output measurements. Our measurements are accurate, but they are usually much lower than the misleading "calculated" figures. Please click here to learn more about LED brightness measurement.

LED Components. Diode Dynamics uses only the highest quality LED chips in the production of its bulbs. This means we use only brand-name suppliers such as Epistar, Cree, Osram, and Samsung.

While Diode Dynamics bulbs may look the same as others on the market, most copycat bulbs use economy-grade LED chips in order to reduce costs. This greatly reduces the reliability and overall brightness of the bulb when you compare it to Diode Dynamics.

Construction. Although LED technology allows for extremely long bulb life, the market is flooded with cheap LED bulbs that fail prematurely due to inferior construction. The worst enemy of LEDs is excessive heat, and when bulbs are not designed properly, they do not disperse heat as well, leading to premature failure.

Off-brand, cheap bulbs exhibit poor solder uniformity, high levels of flux in the solder, uneven chip placement, low-gauge terminal wires, poor assembly, and bulbs held together with inferior adhesives. At best, solder joints will crack and fail on low-quality LEDs after a few weeks of use. In the worst case, these bulbs can damage housings as the extra flux and adhesive evaporates and creates a residue on the lens of the housing.

Diode Dynamics bulbs are produced with modern, computerized equipment, and only the best materials, to ensure complete uniformity, high quality, and long bulb life.

All Diode Dynamics products come with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and a 3-year limited replacement warranty. For more information, please view the Warranty Information page.

  1. XP80 white (2011 Subaru Forester XT) Review by Chimper

These are by far the best and most noticeable light upgrade that I've made to my car in terms of enhanced safety and function (and all my exterior lights are now leds from diode dynamics). These are super bright and really do a good job lighting up my driveway in a rural area. In the winter, when I get home from work, it's dark and I appreciate having these things every single day. These aren't cheap but it's like other reviewers have said, if it saves you from backing into something in the dark once it will probably have paid for itself. It's like have a seat of headlights at the back of your car. I'm really happy with these. (Posted on 12/24/16)

  2. (correct post) Review by Barry

Sorry I posted a review earlier on the wrong bulb. THIS is correct though, and these things are amazing. If you are concerned with safety and visibility, these are a must. My wife will be getting these soon. (Posted on 2/8/15)

  3. Stage 3 XP80 Cool White Review by neally_boy

I bought the Stage 3 XP80 Cool White for my 2011 Subaru Forester XT to replace my OEM backup lights and I have to say it makes a huge difference. I changed all my rear lights including Brake/Tail and Turn Signals to the XP80 LED's and this is the only one where I can see a real difference. When backing up, the rear lights brighten up the immediate area clearly and actually makes for safer vision at night. I feel its money well spent and would recommend this even with the high price point. (Posted on 11/1/14)

  4. XP80 stage 3 cool white Review by rocketman

These stage 3's are great. Yes they are expensive, but if they save you from backing into something just once, they will pay for themselves. I can easily see whatever is behind me even through the dark tint of my windows. Plus, they look really cool! Glad I installed them. (Posted on 8/25/14)

  5. Works well for 2015 Review by techsetter

I got the stage 3 backup lights for my 2015 Forester. Make sure you specify W16W / 921 bulb size. It will fit, and it does a great job lighting up the area back there. Also helps improve the backup camera tremendously. (Posted on 8/7/14)

  6. Big improvement over OEM Review by Lonnie

I was tired of the marginal OEM lamps and replaced them with Stage 3s. The difference is outstanding. With my '10 Forester in the garage, these light up my entire driveway and most of the width of the street.

At $90/pair they are very pricy but in the long run will probably be worth it. (Posted on 1/17/14)

  7. 2011 FXT stage 2 backup led Review by vthang73

I bought stage 2 backup led for my 2011 FXT, it's a nice bright light, brighter than stock. I think stage 2 is more than enough; stage 3 would be a bit overwhelmed. Generally I'm satisfied with this led upgrade. (Posted on 12/25/13)

  8. A lot brighter than stock. Nice bright white color. Review by SNWKNG

I am very excited to have these installed. I always wished I could increase the brightness of my backup lights when I am backing up at night and these work awesome! And they look fantastic. (Posted on 9/7/13)

Backup LEDs are a direct replacement. Just change the bulb! You will not need any resistors or other accessories.

Remove your factory bulb

  1. 1. Access your tail light bulb. You may need to pull back the trunk/cargo carpet and/or unscrew the visible nuts holding the light in.
  2. 2. Remove the socket from the tail light by twisting counterclockwise.
  3. 3. Remove the factory bulb by pulling it out of the socket.

Install your new LED bulb

  1. 1. Plug new LED bulb into socket by pushing it into place. Make sure it is firmly installed.
  2. 2. Test the bulb to ensure proper function.
  3. 3. Insert socket back into tail light, and reassemble as necessary. That's it!
