FUNCTION

From the factory, rear turn signal bulbs are powered by standard incandescent lights that light up white in color, and cast light through your red or amber tail light lens. This results in a washed-out color.

Newer luxury vehicles are using LEDs for turn signals, because LEDs offer a crisp, instant on/off function, increased brightness, and true, vibrant color. By replacing the bulbs in your vehicle, you can achieve this modern look!

The installation is 100% plug-and-play, just replace your factory bulb. The bulb may blink faster since it uses less power, and your vehicle thinks the bulb is out- to fix this, please see "hyperblinking" section below.

BULB DESIGN

HP48: This bulb is non-polar, CK compatible, with 48 Epistar 3014 LED chips. Thanks to the cap on the top, the light from this High Power Bulb is shined backwards and away from the bulb, not straight out. This means the output is excellent, because it uses the vehicle's housing completely, which then shines the light much more uniformly.

HP11: Four side-firing 1.5W-rated Osram LED chips, and one 5W-rated LED chip on top, which is projected by a lens for maximum effective brightness. The bulb is housed in a machined aluminum casing, which provides superior heat diffusion for long life.

XP80: Each of the four sides of this bulb contains three 5W-rated chips, and the top is fitted with four more under a projector lens. This is the brightest self-contained automotive LED bulb on the market, and is housed in an aluminum casing with a textured finish for maximum heatsinking properties.

Fitment. All three bulbs use a quality inject-molded 7443 terminal, with a full-size base connector and proper pin alignment, designed for exact replacement of your factory 7443 bulb.

Included in your order is TWO BULBS.

COLOR

These LEDs illuminate in a crisp, bright, amber or red hue. Choose the color of your rear turn signal lens.

BRIGHTNESS

Diode Dynamics offers several brightness options so you can choose what fits you best.  These options are listed by the design and the lumen output of each bulb:

HP48: Slightly lower brightness than OEM bulbs, but still provides the crisp, modern instant on/off of LED technology.
HP11: Slightly higher brightness than OEM bulbs.
XP80: Much brighter than OEM bulbs. These are bright!

Lumens: BUYER BEWARE! Most sellers just provide "calculated" lumen numbers, based on the maximum potential brightness of the LED chips on the bulb. For example, if a bulb has five 10-lumen chips, they will rate it at 50 lumens. However, this is not accurate, as the design of an LED bulb does not get rid of heat fast enough to run the LEDs at maximum.

These "calculated" lumen ratings are much, much higher than the true, measured light output, so it will look like competitors' bulbs are brighter than ours. This is because Diode Dynamics does not provide inflated "calculated" numbers; we believe it is misleading. We test the actual brightness of the bulbs in our lab, to provide real lumen output measurements. Our measurements are accurate, but they are usually much lower than the misleading "calculated" figures. Please click here to learn more about LED brightness measurement.

QUALITY

LED Components. Diode Dynamics uses only the highest quality LED chips in the production of its bulbs. This means we use only brand-name suppliers such as Epistar, Cree, Osram, and Samsung.

While Diode Dynamics bulbs may look the same as others on the market, most copycat bulbs use economy-grade LED chips in order to reduce costs. This greatly reduces the reliability and overall brightness of the bulb when you compare it to Diode Dynamics.

Construction. Although LED technology allows for extremely long bulb life, the market is flooded with cheap LED bulbs that fail prematurely due to inferior construction. The worst enemy of LEDs is excessive heat, and when bulbs are not designed properly, they do not disperse heat as well, leading to premature failure.

Off-brand, cheap bulbs exhibit poor solder uniformity, high levels of flux in the solder, uneven chip placement, low-gauge terminal wires, poor assembly, and bulbs held together with inferior adhesives. At best, solder joints will crack and fail on low-quality LEDs after a few weeks of use. In the worst case, these bulbs can damage housings as the extra flux and adhesive evaporates and creates a residue on the lens of the housing.

Diode Dynamics bulbs are produced with modern, computerized equipment, and only the best materials, to ensure complete uniformity, high quality, and long bulb life.

All Diode Dynamics products come with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and a 3-year limited replacement warranty. For more information, please view the Warranty Information page.

HYPERBLINKING

The turn signals on most vehicles will begin to blink fast (hyperblink) when LED bulbs are installed. This is because the new LEDs will use less power than the original bulbs, so your vehicle thinks that the bulb is out and warns you by hyperblinking.

This phenomenon will be the same for every LED bulb on the market- there is no such thing as a "no hyperblink" LED bulb, even though some companies advertise them as such.

Flasher Replacement: Replacing the flasher relay, the module that controls blinking speed, is the easiest option to correct hyperblinking. You can remove the flasher on your vehicle, which is a small relay module under the dash, and replace it with a new flasher designed for LEDs. You will only need one flasher for your vehicle, whether you are replacing just one pair or both sets of turn signal bulbs (front/rear).

Resistor Kit: If you prefer not to change the flasher, you can add resistors to the bulb's circuit, and mimic the power consumption of the original bulb, returning the vehicle to normal turn signal speed. Resistors are a universal fix for any vehicle. Diode Dynamics resistors are 50W, 6 ohm, and come with extra-long connection wires for easy install. If you have both front and rear LED turn signals, you should purchase one set for each pair, to create enough resistance for the whole turn signal circuit. The installation itself takes only 10-15 minutes, and involves making two simple connections. Everything you need is included in the kit.

  1. Amber HP11 Rear Turn Signals Review by Sergio

They are hard to install due to their length and the short cable length, but look amazing once installed. Had them on for almost a year, no issues. (Posted on 12/3/15)

I bought the Stage 1 Amber LED with the thought that I didn't want to blind the person behind me with my turn signal. The lights look great at night and are perfectly visible during the day! Installation was super easy, and the lights give it that modern look. (Posted on 4/9/15)

  3. Compared red vs Amber Review by Steve

    Quality

I purchased the SMD11 rear turn signal replacement in red to compare to the amber. Although I like the look of the all red rear end, the turn signal didn't pop quite as much. It looked like my hazards were on. The amber, especially the SMD11, is very striking and catches your eye. The red is cleaner but I'm concerned about traffic. Sticking with amber, but try both, see what you like.

This was a little tricky to install, if you don't remove the tail light assembly, the cable doesn't have enough slack in it to install the bulb and put it back in the housing. I ended up removing the housing completely and installing it was WAY easier.

The bulbs are very high quality and look great. The only drawback is that the LED's have a colored base which reflects and has a hint of the color of the bulb. I am taping off the base with black electrical tape to reduce the reflection a little. (Noted in other reviews as well, great tip guys!)

As a suggestion, purchase the new relay as well. For $10, you solve the problem You can buy more expensive solutions, but for the every day driver this relay is great.

The instant on/off feature is great, and the look is what I wanted. Brightness was a little brighter than the red in the brake light with the SMD11's so keep that in mind if you are trying to match the look. If I were to have stayed with red, I would suggest you go one stage down. (Posted on 3/21/15)

  4. Very clean look with this upgrade Review by Steve

I purchased the SMD11 rear turn signal replacement and I am very happy with the results. This was a little tricky to install, if you don't remove the tail light assembly, the cable doesn't have enough slack in it to install the bulb and put it back in the housing. I ended up removing the housing completely (since I dropped the bulb in there) and installing it was WAY easier.

The bulbs are very high quality and look great. The only drawback is that the LED's have a colored base which reflects and has a hint of the color of the bulb. I am taping off the base with black electrical tape to reduce the reflection a little. (Noted in other reviews as well, great tip guys!)

The instant on/off feature is great, and the look is what I wanted. I may still swap out for red to clean up the rear end, but not sure yet. Brightness was right on with the SMD11's (Posted on 3/2/15)

  5. Amber XP80s Review by Chris
    Price
    Value
    Quality

I got a set of Amber XP80 LEDs for my FR-S rear turn signals and they're great. The color is spot on, they're brighter than the OEM halogen turn signals, and they just plain blink crisper than the stock bulbs.

Unfortunately, the XP80 bulbs are significantly larger than the stock halogen bulbs. They need to be stuck partway into the tail light housing because they are plugged into the factory socket. Be sure not to accidentally drop the XP80 bulbs into the tail light housing when installing.

One issue I noticed is that the yellow base of the XP80 bulbs reflects on the chrome housing. I used 3M electrical tape to wrap around the yellow bulbs and now the chrome housing is clear without any reflection of the yellow.

These bulbs are a bit pricey at $90 but they're the only LED turn signals that I've used that are actually brighter than stock. Most other LEDs are actually dimmer than stock, so what you gain in cosmetics you lose in safety/function. These XP80s are bright enough that not only do they look good, they are functionally and probably safer than the stock halogens since the XP80s are brighter. (Posted on 2/18/15)

  6. Awesome Product Review by Chris

I ordered the XP80s in red for my rear turn signals. This was another great addition to my car. My rear turn signals are super bright, show through my painted tail lights perfectly, and a really nice color. The installation on these was a tab bit tricky. I had to put the bulb halfway into the light, then connect it to the harness, and then push it in and twist. No problem though. (Posted on 1/28/15)

This change really is night and day when you go from halogen to LED. Especially with the on and off of the signal. Instead of that fade in, fade out, it is a definitive on/off. Super crisp, bright, and modern. One thing is, it is a little tricky to install since it is longer than the halogen bulb and they don't give you a whole lot of slack with the OEM wiring, so it is a litter hard to maneuver in the hole. 8. Brighter than stock, shines through smoked tails Review by Kaleb

I bought these because I didn't like the amber stock turn signals and they didn't shine though my tinted taillight housings, these shine through better and look better being red to match the LED brake lights, also looks more modern when the flash because they flash instant on-off-on-off, instead of dimming in and off like the stocks (Posted on 10/29/14)

I didn't like the oem amber rear turn signals so I bought these. Great upgrade! for a stage 1 they are pretty bright, definitely need these for our smaller cars that demand more attention in traffic. They even stand out after I did a red tint paint job on my taillights. (Posted on 7/10/13)

Brightest signals I have ever owned! They do feel a little bit lose at the connection but I out some electric tape to help hold everything together (no it's not visible) and can't wait to see how it turns out, I doubt they will fall out but so far so good! (Posted on 2/28/13)
