Diode Dynamics is pleased to offer the HYLUX HID Conversion Kit. After years of experience in the industry, we have assembled this kit, made up of the absolute best components on the market, to provide reliable operation at an OEM level of quality.

BALLASTS

The ballasts are the most important component of an HID kit, as they provide the power. After years of providing midrange and even high-quality ballasts for vehicles of all makes and models, Diode Dynamics identified a company called HYLUXTEK as the very best manufacturer in the industry. Their newest ballast, the 2A88 slim, is simply the best aftermarket ballast on the market. You will see other high-end retailers carrying this same ballast, usually under their own brand name, for a much higher cost.

Controller Chip. Most digital (DSP) ballasts on the market still use generic chips, which are cheap, and work pretty well. However, when you need maximum quality, you need a new computer chip designed for one purpose. This is known as an Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). These ballasts use brand new DSP ASIC chips for maximum efficiency and brightness, fast warmup time, and extremely stable operation. To prevent counterfeiting, HYLUX has even included a fully-sealed transparent window in the ballast, showing the ASIC inside.

CAN-BUS. Some vehicles have systems which sense the power consumption. Since HIDs use less power than factory halogen bulbs, this can cause issues. You can resolve this by adding capacitors, known as warning cancellers, or some ballasts come with them built-in. However, sometimes that's still not enough to trick the vehicle! To fix it, this ballast has an industry-leading CANBUS module, capable of smoothing PWM signals up to 100hz, and providing feedback to the vehicle to equalize the load, to defeat even the most troublesome modern CANBUS systems. Even if your vehicle does not use a CAN-BUS system, these modules will provide extra power smoothing for reliable operation. Simply put, this ballast will work on any vehicle, the first time you plug it in. With this kit, you don't need to worry about capacitors, warning cancellers, or resistors.

Igniter and Startup. You may have heard of ignition issues with other ballasts, caused by an igniter that is too small to withstand cold temperatures. No reason to worry with these ballasts- the oversized 24kV external igniter means that you will never have an ignition issue, even in the coldest temperatures. Additionally, the ASIC chip in these ballasts means that you only need 4 amps at nominal voltage to start up. These ballasts consume less power than any other on the market, meaning 100% reliable and fast startups, every time.

Case. These ballasts are the smallest you will find, about the size of a pack of playing cards. The case is fully potted, or filled with epoxy, which makes them fully waterproof and shockproof. This material is expensive, so most ballasts on the market are only given a coating, or partial fill. HYLUX ballasts are completely filled to the top, sparing no expense to ensure longevity. If you take off the back cover on this ballast, you'll see what we mean!

BULBS

The bulbs included with Diode Dynamics kits are CNLight bulbs, which are widely regarded as the most dependable aftermarket bulbs on the market. Just like the HYLUX ballasts, you will see other companies offering these same bulbs under their own brand name. They provide superior life, brightness, and color attenuation when compared to generic HID bulbs, like those found in most cheaper kits on the market. With these bulbs you won't have any issue with bulbs not matching in color, or flickering, which is common in cheaper bulbs. The one-piece base design prevents any issues with separation over time, making the entire bulb extremely reliable.

RELAY

You may choose to include a heavy-duty relay, to power your HIDs directly from the battery, instead of the factory wiring. This relay has been designed from scratch, and utilizes a fully-sealed, waterproof relay, with flyback diode, and even has a built-in capacitor for input power smoothing. All wires are sleeved with braided techflex for an attractive appearance and extra protection. The input wires are each a meter long, and the output wires are one meter and two meters, which means the wiring will be long enough for even the biggest vehicles. The single-ground design makes installation easy. This relay was designed with reliability, convenience, and long-life in mind.

A relay wiring harness is not required for operation of the HIDs in most vehicles, however, please be aware that some vehicles do require it for operation. If you're not sure, just include it with your order, and you can always return it for a full refund if you don't need it!

COLOR/TEMPERATURE

The CNLight bulb temperatures are rated accurately in correlated color temperature at 35 watts, and have an industry-standard 3000 hours of estimated bulb life. Please be aware that most HID bulbs are rated inaccurately from other manufacturers. 8000K is not dark blue, and 6000K is not pure white! We provide accurately-measured colors with a range of options to suit your taste.

3000K is our lowest temperature, and has a pure yellow output, which is great for use in fog lights.

4300K is a natural white output, as seen on vehicles with factory HIDs. It will not have any blue tint to its color, and might appear slightly warm.

5000K is a pure white output, without any warm hint, and no blue either. It may not be available in your specific bulb size, in which case it will not be shown as an option.

6000K is our most popular color, which produces an ice white color. It has a very slight hint of blue, and matches best with most LEDs.

8000K is our highest temperature, which produces an ice blue color. This is not a strong blue color though- it is still primarily white, meaning there will be no decrease in light output.

I just installed a full set, simple said, this is the best Aftermarket solution I've seen, installation and performance.

The installation is still a "Measure Twice, Cut Once" exercise, but honestly, 95% was about planning the positioning and placement of the Relay/Ballast side of the kit. The other 5% was a grommet cut in a rubber gasket.

Lights delivery on their intended function and don't vary the OEM light spread or direction while lighting up with much more effectiveness than the standard bulb set. (Posted on 1/10/16)

Installing these lights were straight forward and I was able to complete the entire job in less then an hour. My wife loves her 2015 Explorer Sport, but has hated the headlights every since we owned it. Will drive it tonight and update the review if the quality improves over the OEM.
All connections are plug and go, but the main connections is revesable and you need to ensure the red side connects to the tan/ cream side of the factory plug. (Posted on 1/9/16)

I ordered these for my parents' 2013 Explorer after having to drive them one night in their vehicle for a road trip. The factory lights were a miserable dinge yellow and I had a hard time seeing with my 40ish eyes and knew their 60ish and 70ish eyes had to be suffering. Quick delivery and easy install. Hiding the wires and ballast was the most time consuming, but easily done under the fender well dust shield with double sided foam tape. My dad now says it is like driving with daylight instead of night light. Thanks for such a great product to help keep mom and dad safe on the road! (Posted on 10/25/15)

We installed these in our 2015 explorer sport in about 25 minutes total including mounting the ballasts and installing the grommet in the back of the dust caps, we also had the dealership change the DRL's to the amber marker lights in the front like the limited models - this is exactly how this vehicle should have been when it came out of the factory - they are virtually exactly the same as the HID's in our 2014 F150, I would highly recommend these as an upgrade to anyone with a late model explorer sport/xlt. Night driving is easily atleast 3 times as bright - high beams work as factory as well, i would install these again in a heartbeat. thank you diode dynamics!! (Posted on 10/3/15)

I recently installed the HID conversion kit in my 2013 Ford Explorer Sport, and I am very happy with the quality of the product and the improvement it has made to the safety and night time looks of the vehicle.
As other reviewers have mentioned, this is how the Sport should have been like from the factory.

Although there was a lack of instructions with the product, the kit was very easy to install, and truely is plug and play. (Posted on 9/14/15)

These are awesome lights, super quality components, and a fantastic value. However, I did mark the kit as a 4 on quality as there are virtually no instructions. I am very mechanic and car savvy so it only took me about 60 mins to install both sides and figure everything out, however this is with some trial and error. The kit wiring harness would be greatly improved with simple labels on each end such as "vehicle harness" or "Ballast" and a note to reverse polarity for the multi-plug that goes to the vehicle harness if they do not power up. Otherwise, great kit, I actually like driving my car at night now. (Posted on 7/14/15)

After being spoiled by our 2012 Explorer that had the 302 package with the HID lighting, we were disappointed that our new 2015 Explorer didn't come with this and we got too good of a deal to wait for the next one. Spent some time on a couple of ford forums and Diode Dynamics was mentored very favorably.

Ordered the 6k kit and it arrived in 2 days as promised. Took about 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon to install. Driver's side is a PITA, but most of the time was spent making the wires look nice. Perfect match to my 6k fog lights and look as good as the factory version.

A couple of short evening drives convinced me that these are the real deal and will allow for safer night driving. Still don't understand why a $45,000 vehicle doesn't come with HID as stock. ......

Very happy with purchase, but we'll need to let some time go by to determine how well they're going to hold up. Fingers crossed. (Posted on 4/29/15)

OMG!!! I couldn't believe how much of a huge difference these lights made. I originally purchased an HID upgrade kit from eBay, which I did previously with my 2002 Ford explorer, but was disappointed. I found Diode Dynamics in a few forums during my research about headlights for Ford Explorer 2014 XLT. and decided to give them a try. I'm was so excited when I saw the results and instantly thought all these reviews were right on from quick delivery, ease of installation, and results. I purchased the 6000k, but don't have the hint of blue as previous review state, which I did want. Give them a try and you won't be disappointed. (Posted on 3/31/15)

This is a must for anyone with an Explorer with Halogen lighting. I got the 4300k kit and I'm very pleased with result. In fact, I liked the upgrade so much, now I want the Fog light kit. I'll be doing that as soon as the high-lumen yellow HID fogs are back.

Installation was fairly straightforward for anyone with a modicum of gadget connecting experience. What makes it a tough install is the cramped space on drivers side, making it difficult to align the the bulbs with socket pattern. Once you figure out the correct way to insert the bulbs, it's easy. This is the way this car should have been sold. (Posted on 1/28/15)

I recently ordered the 9005 HIDKIT as an upgrade for the halogen lights on my new 2015 ford Explorer, the kit arrived in two days as advertised. It took me maybe a half a day to do the install, somehow I blew a fuse and it took me a bit to track it down or it would have been much quicker. The lights are so much better than the OEM Halogen bulbs, I'm giving serious thought to getting a kit for my Lexus es350 now. I ordered the kit with the 6000K bulb which proved to be a little to blue for my taste, without a question, they were exchanged for the 4300K bulbs, what great customer support. If your looking for a brighter headlight option don't hesitate to give these people a try. (Posted on 11/24/14)

I LOVE my 2015 Explorer Sport, EXCEPT for the halogen headlights. As others reviewers have stated, the factory lights are on the edge of dangerous. This conversion kit not only has satisfied my safety concerns, but makes my SUV look "top gear".
Installation is very easy and the quality of obvious as soon as you open the box. Personally I would HIGHLY recommend the 6000K bulb. Nice & bright with that cool hint of blue. Thanks Diodedynamics for making my ride look bad-a**! (Posted on 11/14/14)

  20. An absolute MUST! Review by King Joseph

As others have stated, the factory lighting for the 2011-2014 Explorer is flat out dangerous. For as inexpensive as this kit is, I was shocked by the top notch quality, packaging, and results.

I now relish the opportunity to drive on poorly lit, back country roads - just to enjoy the capabilities of this system.

I'm surprised that one reviewer stated an auto shop had 2 techs perform a 6 hour install. I had the help of one friend and we did the headlights and the foglights in about 2 hours; we could have done it faster if we'd had the right tools handy to make the cutout in the dust cover (get an Exacto knife).

In short - this mod was easy, inexpensive, and made all the difference in the world from a safety and visibility perspective. Why the Explorer Sport doesn't come stock with HIDs is beyond me, but mine now finally looks the part of a premium vehicle. (Posted on 10/23/14)

  21. Highest Quality System Available Review by Irl4512

I ordered the 4300k kit from diode dynamics after a terrible experience with coolbulbs.com, and I couldn't be happier with the results. The ballasts, bulbs, zip ties, adhesives were all included in the kit, in addition to the relay. The other kit I had ordered from the "other company" only included the ballasts and bulbs, in low quality packaging. Hooking up the kit was easy, but hiding all the wires and ballasts was a bit of a task. With the provided zip ties, and some of my own, I was able to nicely conceal the wires. This is an absolute no-brainer upgrade for any 2013 to 2015 explorer sport with what I would consider to be one of the worst factory headlight setups on the market. The upgrade in brightness is astonishing. If you are even remotely considering this, GO FOR IT, and order from this company. Couldn't be happier. (Posted on 9/7/14)

  22. Very Good System Review by TNRC51

I installed both the headlight and the fog light conversions in my 2014 Explorer Sport. I have to say I was very impressed with the quality of the components and the CANBUS wiring harness provided. Everything was plug and play. The only cutting is for the dust cover on the back of the headlight bucket. Everything worked the first try. The longest process in the install is making the wiring neat and tidy. There is plenty of length in the harness so routing is no issue. All in all it took me an afternoon to do both sets.

The results are impressive. I feel this is a case of you get what you pay for. This is what the factory should have offered to begin with. I have not had any issues with oncoming traffic flashing me. I have not used the "fogs" with traffic as of yet. With the new headlights I honestly haven't needed them. I'm sure this fall and winter they will get a workout. (Posted on 6/25/14)

  23. Wow. Just. Wow. Review by R56 Ed

Vehicle: 2014 Explorer XLT, stock Halogen projector headlamps.
This is my first vehicle with halogen projector headlights, and I have never been as disappointed at the lack of light from an OEM setup in my lifetime of owning cars. The stock lights are pathetic. Driving at night was challenging, to say the least. Dangerous is a better description.

After months of researching upgrades, I stumbled across a few posts on the Ford Explorer Forum about Diode Dynamics HID conversion kits. One poster had recently installed them and seemed happy, and a few others were planning to do so, too. I bit the bullet and ordered a set of both the headlight and fog light conversion kits last week, and they arrived in two days (much sooner than I expected). Great customer service... thanks!

I made an appointment with my trusted mechanic (I don't have the eyesight or patience to fiddle with this kind of stuff any more), and today was the big day. The kits were shipped with no installation instructions, and looked pretty much like a plug and play installation. Well, maybe not so much. Granted, the first time anyone performs a job for the first time there is a learning curve, so the process is maybe 90% figuring things out, and 10% doing the job.

My mechanic had two technicians work on the car for 6 hours for the complete installation, and the job was first class. Everything is tucked out of the way, and is as clean and neat as was possible, given the length of the supplied wiring harnesses. I think they would have liked to have a bit more length to the harnesses to make things fit easier, but they managed to get it done. They said that the headlight kit was by far the easier to install of the two, and that the fog light kit was a real challenge to find secure places to attach the ballasts.

I took the Explorer out tonight for a test drive and am thrilled with the improvement in the headlight brightness, color and intensity. This should have been stock equipment. I am very pleased and would buy these again in a heartbeat (if I was dumb enough to buy a car with substandard headlights). Hopefully I learned my lesson about buying a car without driving it at night.

Bottom line... For the money this is a terrific upgrade over the OEM headlights. It's corny, but the improvement is like night and day. (Posted on 4/1/14)

  24. OEM look & feel Review by Brewboy

This kit is easy to install and very good quality. All connections look OEM and there is absolutely no cutting wires its 100% plug & play. Shipping was quick and the follow up Customer Service was excellent. My only suggestion would be more specific install instruction for the specific vehicle the kit is designed for instead of generic instructions. This would make installation even easy for the novice installer. The light output looks OEM next to another Explorer with factory HID lighting. (Posted on 3/30/14)

The installation of HIDs consists of three main steps, which are the same for every vehicle. The process is quite straightforward:

  • -Remove factory bulbs and replace with HID bulbs
  • -Connect ballast to bulb plugs
  • -Mount ballast and clean up wiring

The following video shows installation on a Scion FR-S, which is very comparable to installation for most vehicles. The only tedious part for some vehicles will be accessing the bulb itself. Please check your manual, as some vehicles require the removal of the front bumper cover. Still, the installation should only take 60-90 minutes.
